Make informed decisions when taking
dietary supplements
Are you currently taking dietary supplements? Do they contain the
vitamins, minerals, and other ingredients necessary to supplement
the diet? Why are you taking supplements? Are they beneficial to
you? Can you feel a change in your health since you have been
taking them? Are they "natural"? These are just some of the
questions that should be answered before you begin or if you have
been taking them for quite some time. It is better to be well-informed
before ingesting something that might be harmful to you.
Are you fully aware of the supplements
that you are taking?
Consumers spend hundreds of dollars each year on supplements, yet
there are quite a number of those individuals that are not fully aware
of the who, what, when, where, how, and why they take them. First
of all, who made the recommendation? Was it a friend, the internet,
TV commercial, or physician? What supplements are you taking?
When is the best time to take them? Where do you purchase these
items, from the internet, mail order, or pharmacy? How do you know
if you are receiving the right ingredients as the label claims?
Last, why are you taking them, for health, energy, replace nutrients
that are missing from your diet? All of these questions are not
questioning one's competency, the idea is to help expand a more
conscious level of awareness about supplements, vitamins, and
herbs.
Get the facts about "natural" supplements
In recent years, there has been a sharp increase in demand for
natural dietary supplements. Consumers are wanting these products
because they feel they are safe, beneficial, and come from natural
sources. But is the safety and quality living up to what the
manufacturers claim? The laws are less strict governing regulations
for supplements than drugs. A supplement manufacturer does not
have to prove to the FDA the product's effectiveness and quality.
Though some natural supplements may be beneficial for others, they
may not have the same effect for you.
When in doubt, check with your physician
Check with your physician if you have any questions or concerns. Your
physician may have the latest and updated information on the
supplements that you are not sure about. Communicate to your
physician the options you are exploring and what would be their
suggestions and recommendations.
The bottom line, is for you to do your research and get the facts. Take
control of your health by having the knowledge and information to
make the right decisions.
